Satechi SM1 Slim Mechanical Backlit Bluetooth Keyboard in Dark is a slim, backlit mechanical keyboard designed to work with Mac and Windows computers. It is equipped with low profile mechanical switches of the Brown type, white backlight with 14 modes and four connection profiles.
The keyboard can communicate with two devices via Bluetooth 5.0, one device via a USB 2,4 GHz receiver and one device in wired USB-C mode. The built-in battery provides up to 16,5 hours of operation with backlight on or up to about 2 months of operation when the backlight is turned off.
Low Profile Brown Mechanical Switches
Satechi SM1 uses touch, low-profile mechanical switches of the Brown type. They provide a noticeable response when pressing the keys.
The switches are soldered to the PCB and do not support hot-swap replacement. The manufacturer informs that you should not attempt to remove the switches from the keyboard.
White backlight with 14 modes
The keyboard has a white backlight covering 14 different modes. A dedicated key allows you to switch between available backlight patterns.
To change the mode, press the key marked with the bulb symbol once. Holding it for about 5 seconds allows you to turn the backlight off or back on.
The brightness of the backlight can be adjusted with dedicated keys. When Caps Lock is turned on, the backlight of this key turns turquoise.
Four connection profiles
Satechi SM1 allows you to use a total of four connection profiles:
- Fn + 1: first Bluetooth profile,
- Fn + 2: second Bluetooth profile,
- Fn + 3: wireless connection via USB 2,4 GHz receiver,
- Fn + 4: wired USB-C connection.
Choosing the right combination allows you to switch the keyboard to the connection profile you need.
Bluetooth 5.0 for two devices
The keyboard supports Bluetooth 5.0 and allows you to save two separate Bluetooth profiles. The combination of Fn + 1 and Fn + 2 is used to select them.
To start pairing, hold down the selected combination for about 5 seconds until the corresponding key starts flashing quickly. Then select “Slim SM1 Keyboard” or “Bluetooth Keyboard” in the Bluetooth settings of your device.
Connection via USB 2,4 GHz receiver
The set includes a wireless USB-A receiver 2,4 GHz. The receiver is magnetically attached to the underside of the keyboard.
After connecting the receiver to the USB-A port of your computer, compatible adapter, hub or docking station, select Fn+3 mode. The keyboard will automatically connect to the receiver.
Wired USB-C mode
The Satechi SM1 can also act as a wired USB-C keyboard. After connecting the USB-C cable to the device, select the Fn + 4 combination.
In wired mode, the keyboard can simultaneously replenish battery power if the port used provides power. Wired mode also works via a compatible hub or docking station.
Modes for macOS and Windows
The keyboard is compatible with Mac computers and Windows devices. By default, it works in Mac mode, and the corresponding combinations allow you to change the assignment of system functions:
- Fn+O: macOS, iPadOS, and iOS mode,
- Fn + P: Windows mode.
The selected key flashes briefly, confirming the change in system mode.
Additional keys for Windows
The set includes interchangeable keycaps designed for Windows, including Windows and Alt keys. They allow you to adjust the visible markings to the layout of the system used.
The default Mac overlays can be removed by lifting them vertically and then placed in their place the included Windows overlays.
Removable and replaceable keycaps
The Satechi SM1 keycaps can be removed and replaced. The manufacturer recommends using a special tool to remove the overlays so as not to damage the switches under them.
It is possible to use your own overlays made in the Low Profile MX standard. Only overlays are interchangeable – mechanical switches are soldered and do not support hot-swap replacement.
Aluminum housing and adjustable feet
The keyboard has an aluminum housing and a bottom part made of plastic. Adjustable feet allow you to change the height of the keyboard setting.
The presented variant was finished in the color of the manufacturer Dark.
Built-in battery with a capacity of 2500 mAh
Satechi SM1 is equipped with a built-in lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 2500 mAh. The battery is not designed to be replaced on its own.
The manufacturer determines the working time for:
- up to 16,5 hours with backlight on,
- up to about 2 months with backlight off.
Actual runtime may depend on how you use the keyboard and the settings you select.
Charging via USB-C
The battery is charged via a USB-C port. Full charging usually takes about 2 to 3 hours.
When charging, the space bar turns red. When fully charged, the indicator turns off or lights up white if the keyboard backlight remains on.
In low power mode, the indicator placed at the space bar begins to flash slowly, and the keyboard backlight is turned off to reduce battery consumption.
Sleep mode depending on the type of connection
How sleep mode works depends on the selected connection:
- Bluetooth: the backlight turns off after 1 minute of inactivity, and the keyboard goes into sleep mode after 30 minutes,
- 2,4 GHz USB receiver: the backlight turns off after 1 minute, and the sleep mode starts after 10 minutes,
- wired mode: the keyboard does not go into sleep mode, and the backlight remains on until it is turned off manually.
Pressing any key wakes up the keyboard working wirelessly.
Function keys and system shortcuts
Satechi SM1 offers function keys designed to control the system, multimedia and backlight:
- F1 and F2: display brightness adjustment,
- F3: Mission Control on macOS
- F4: Spotlight search on macOS,
- F5 and F6: keyboard backlight brightness adjustment,
- F7, F8 and F9: previous track, play or pause and next track,
- F10, F11 and F12: mute, decrease and increase volume,
- Fn + Delete: screen locking on macOS,
- key with scissors symbol: taking a screenshot,
- key with bulb symbol: change the backlight mode.
Function key lock
The Fn + Esc combination allows you to switch the operation of F1–F12 keys between standard functions and multimedia shortcuts.
The flashing Esc key means that the Fn lock is active and the F1–F12 keys act as standard function keys. When the lock is disabled, media shortcuts can be used without holding Fn.
Resetting the keyboard
To restore keyboard settings and delete saved Bluetooth profiles, hold down the Fn + left Ctrl + Delete combination for about 3 to 5 seconds.
The backlight turns off and then flashes three times, confirming the reset. Once reset, it is required to reconnect the keyboard to the devices you are using.
